Have you ever imagined that the liberty you are enjoying right now in using social networking sites might end? Well, you might find it impossible considering that many new social networking sites are being introduced right now on the world wide web. Even sending and receiving emails might have lots of restrictions in the near future. How could this possibly be? Some of us might be unaware of the House Bill entitled STOP ONLINE PIRACY ACT that was sponsored by Congressman Lamar Smith of the 21st District of Texas. The house bill was proposed to censor the sites from so- called “improper internet usage”.
Well, it sounds quite alarming and definitely a threat to those whose source of income is online based. If all websites will be censored, SEO-related jobs will be endangered. Not only that, those business or personal sites will not be exempted from the censorship that the bill is going to impose. What is more alarming is that any irregularities that they could find in a certain website will be subject for blocking. Some of those being presented are infringing links, and other minor issues that could be the main cause for your site to be blocked. It sounds quite unfair, right?
Come to think of it, there are spammers who just couldn’t think of anything better than to send spam messages right through your inbox and this is enough ground for your site to be blocked. The sad thing there is that you just couldn’t control those spam messages to get through your inbox even if you have anti-spam methods. If this will be the sole grounds for your site to be blocked, all your investments will just be put to waste. Especially if your site is built or meant for business.
The question “Why the STOP ONLINE PIRACY ACT is wrong?” may stir different opinions. One thing is for sure, though. We need to take logical action before this bill will eventually become a law and put our online businesses at risk.
