What is Guided Meditation?

Meditation is the practice of inducing a mode of consciousness or training the mind as a means to an end or to realize a particular benefit. People meditate to reflect, contemplate, gain clarity, realize meaning, and restore their bodies, minds, and souls. Guided meditation is a purposeful effort where an outside source leads the imagination down a mental path to relax, solve a problem, or enlighten.

A facilitator leads a guided meditation session in person or via audio recording. The participant follows the words being spoken, releasing his or her mind and allowing it to travel freely into subconscious thoughts. This practice is typically used to help people reach deep into their minds to discover previously unexplored thoughts and feelings. It helps people recall past memories, release their negative emotions, modify their behavior, and clarify their life purpose and goals.

This slow, intentional process puts conscious thought at rest so subconscious thoughts can emerge. It begins by getting into a comfortable position and becoming aware of the whole body while focusing on breathing. The remainder of the process varies based on the goal and may be short or long, led by a male or female, and could be accompanied by music.

This form of meditation may be used as a one-time restorative session or as part of ongoing treatment. Many people prefer it to other types of meditation because if they become so relaxed that they fall asleep, they will still benefit from the process on a subconscious level. When the conscious mind “sleeps,” the subconscious acknowledges and releases experiences.

With guided meditation, people can more positively reflect and contemplate their experiences. They can even replace negative programming with positive versions such as high self-esteem and improved confidence. A guided form of meditation is a natural way to balance worry and overthinking with deep relaxation.

Health Benefits of Meditation

When many of us hear the word “meditation,” we often have a preconceived notion, one that simply dismisses this practice as something we are not interested in. However, there are numerous health benefits to meditating that may change your mind. Finding your “happy place” every day offers much more than a simple timeout from your day.

Meditation, when done properly, allows our entire body to relax. Allowing your body to shut down for just a few minutes every day may be just what the doctor ordered! While there will always be skeptics, there are noted cases where relaxation therapy has helped people improve their overall medical health.

One benefit of meditation is the alleviation of stress. By now, we know stress is directly related to numerous health problems, such as high blood pressure and heart problems. Taking a 20-minute session every day can help decompress and give your body and mind a break from daily stress.

Stress has also been linked to the weakening of the immune system. Meditating allows your body to naturally improve this, allowing it to ward of sickness much more effectively. In addition, meditation is believed to make one more mentally alert, allowing you to concentrate better on the task at hand, seeing the big picture more clearly.

Over time, meditation will enable you to deal with stressful situations better. By learning how to relax, you are able to process the situation more clearly and figure out the solution to the problem you are faced with at the time. Stress management is at the center of the benefits of meditation and why you should take every opportunity available to practice it. Even if it is your train ride into work or a fifteen minute coffee break during the day, make the most of the time and learn meditation techniques that will allow you maximum benefit for the time you can commit to it each day.

How To Meditate

Each and every person needs the proper relaxation after a day’s work. Meditation can be one of the ways to do it. It increases self-awareness through the peace experienced by a person from this activity. The advantages of meditation in the human being are really commendable. However, not everybody can enjoy it because not everybody has the chance to get to know the easy steps to achieve satisfaction from meditation. There are only few steps to make it. In fact, they are so easy that you can do them at home or wherever you are. It is good to apply them every now and then to get rid of the unnecessary feelings you have with your body.

First, you have to get the time that you need. It does not have to be too long. So long as you are able to do the job then you are already good. You can allot an hour for it. Before or after a work can be the very best time for it. But if you can no longer handle the stress, you can do it in between or during the breaks that you have at lunch time. Also look for the spot where you are going to hold the activity. It should be quiet and peaceful in the place. It must not be too crowded with things. A lawn will do or any other free and open space that you know. Then, sit on the ground in an Indian seat position. Straighten your posture. Make sure that your back is linear and your chin is held not too high nor too low. Put your hands in your legs and relax them. Feel the body parts that are not relaxed yet. It will be better if you move your body alignment to perfectly spot the place that you need to attend to. Keep going until you can no longer find one. You are already good once you have reached this pace. Keep it steady by saying mantras like “om” rhythmically. Your breath flow should also be stable and should keep you in posture no matter what happens.

Why Should You Meditate?

Finding time to relax has become harder than ever. We all seem to jump from one thing to the next, rushing around all day just to wake up and do it all again. What we seem to forget it how important it is to take some time each day to work on ourselves. Meditating is an excellent way to take a mental and physical break from the demands we place on ourselves each day. Meditation will not only benefit your well-being, but also your quality of life. The people around you may even benefit from your meditating as well, as they will most likely notice an improvement in your demeanor.

Meditating does not have to be what you see in the movies. You don’t need to sit cross-legged in a temple with incense burning to reap the benefits of meditation. Meditation can simply mean taking 5-10 minutes each day to sit quietly wherever you may be, closing your eyes, and concentrating on your breathing. Try to erase all the to do lists and other thoughts from your mind. Simply relax, your body and your mind, and just be at peace. Some people like to focus on slowing and controlling their breathing, while others recite a mantra such as “appreciate this day” or anything else of your choosing. Listen to the birds chirp, or imagine the sound of the ocean. Doing this has numerous benefits.

Studies show that taking even 5-10 minutes a day to meditate reduces stress levels greatly. Stress contributes to many health problems, and earlier death. Not surprisingly, studies also show that people who meditate live longer, are happier,  and feel more fulfilled. Take this time to reflect on things you are grateful for, even if it’s just that you were able to enjoy a warm cup of coffee that morning. Being grateful increases happiness levels even further.

Meditation’s benefits are greater than even the act itself. Meditating can teach you how to relieve anxiety, and how to concentrate even in chaos. Meditation can teach you how to live in the moment, and be appreciative of each day. If these aren’t exceptional reasons to start meditating, then I don’t know what is!

The Right Place For Meditation

In the world we are in today, it is no longer easy to look for a place where you can completely relax and meditate. If you are living in the city, it is much harder to find a quiet place. From the busy and noisy streets beside your home to the voices of your neighbours fighting endlessly – all of these are very big distractions. Still, there is a need for people to relax and that is why looking for that perfect spot for meditation is very significant.

There is no fixed or required place where people are supposed to do meditation. That is something which is subjective. It depends upon the personality, capacity and ability of the person to cope with the environment. For most people, a serene, tranquil and quiet place for meditation is perfect. They usually go to their gardens where they can only hear the birds chirping and the winds whooshing. Others even travel to places where there are lakes, oceans and other bodies of water because they think, the sound of the waters makes them feel relaxed. On the other hand, other people prefer to stay inside their rooms and lock themselves in just so no one would bother to enter their room and distract them. A lot of people have one thing in common when it comes to meditation. They look for places which are not similar to where others go but they make sure that when they go to that place, they bring calming music with them. This helps them greatly in meditation. Of course, it is also better if you just go to a Yoga studio for meditation. This is the perfect place where you can do so. You can just download music or sound effects online if you are used to meditating in places where there is water and other things which are obviously not present inside a Yoga studio. What is important is that you meditate in places far from your telephone, from your cellular phone, from your laptop, from the television set, from the radio and other devices which can greatly distract you during the process of meditation.
